That would be as good a time as any to finally get started on your annual spring cleaning (if you haven’t started already). Before you know it, everything will look fresh and new and smell ever-so-faintly of pine.

Though you might not suspect it from such an innocent-sounding activity, spring cleaning actually brings with it a considerable number of safety hazards. Everything from heavy lifting to corrosive chemicals could end up giving you a hard time. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe while spring cleaning.

Breathe Easy

It should be common sense at this point that it’s smart to open up your windows and turn on your fans before you start using your cleaning chemicals. It might also be a good idea to wear a surgical mask just in case, and especially if you have a sensitive respiratory system.

Work Smart

If you’re truly cleaning the right way, then it’s going to come with at least a little bit of strenuous activity. If you’re moving heavy objects like a couch or TV, remember to keep you back straight, tighten your stomach, and lift with your legs, not your back. If you’re using a ladder, pay attention to which of the ones you should not go any higher than; it should be marked. If you’re leaning to reach something, make sure your belly button doesn’t past the ladder’s sides.

Think of the Children

If you’ve followed our previous guide to child-proofing your home, you’re in good shape. Obviously, you don’t want to leave those harsh cleaners out for kids to get into. Same goes for ladders; they can be a temptation for kids to climb. If you’re mopping, don’t leave your bucket of water unattended. Even a small amount could pose a drowning hazard.

Check Your Dates

Use spring cleaning as an opportunity to clear out expired products. Getting spoiled and moldy food out of the fridge might get rid of some bad odors and the possibility of contaminating unspoiled products. Go through your medicine cabinet and get rid of any medications past their date.

Read More:

Learn how to clean without harsh chemicals.

Read how to thoroughly clean a mattress.

Check out CNET’s list of best vacuum cleaners on the market.

Once we get past all of this rain we’ve been having, it’s looking like spring weather will finally be here.
