Corn— It has always been woven into the fabric of Helotes. In fact, the Spanish word for green maize, or Helote is believed to be the genesis for the town’s name.
Originally occupied by the Apache and, later, Comanche Indians, the area now known as Helotes became an official township shortly after the Texas Revolution when Scottish immigrant, Dr. George Marnoch purchased the land that now forms the center of town. His home served as a stagecoach stop and a post office for cowboys driving cattle from Bandera to auction in San Antonio. His heirs sold portions of the land to Swiss Immigrant, Arnold Gugger, who built a home and mercantile store around which became downtown. In 1908, the paving of Bandera Road commenced, the first dance hall and filling station were erected, and Helotes never looked back.
In 1946, the manager of San Antonio's Majestic Theatre, John T. Floore, opened the landmark John T. Floore Country Store, which is actually a dance hall (or honky tonk) that draws top Country Western talent, such as Willie Nelson, who still plays there on occasion. Mr. Floore also financed the first annual Helotes Cornyval festival in the 1960s. The tradition continues to this day, and Helotes continues to fight to retain its rugged Hill Country atmosphere.
